oh no, it’s the flu… no show tonight, sorry ;)

After an attack of two young man with migration-background on a 76-year old man in Munich, Germany, Robert Misik wrote an interesting article on this case which was published at Qantara.de (german version here). By outlining the specific situation in Germany, he argues that this particular case must be understood as a direct consequence of a segregated society, where 2nd & 3rd generation immigrants would consider themselves rather “Ausländer” than “German”. According to Misik, it’s hard to “imagine a Hispanic or a Chinese-American attacking a white person in the New York subway and describing him as ‘American shit.’ After all, they too are American.” Not so in Germany (and Austria too).

Meanwhile, Berlin-Grünau detention-center has seen its first dead asylum seeker of the year – the 28-year-old man from Tunisia had committed suicide after being detained on December 28, 2007. The Green party and NGOs such as Refugee Council Berlin are criticizing the police for deficient attendance practices, after a series of incidents in Berlin-Grünau. Coinciding with the UN International Migrant’s Day on December 18, 2007, protesters from the No Borders network blocked access to the bases of Immigration Enforcement Officers in simultaneous actions across the UK, stopping them from entering or leaving in vehicles – read the related press release here.

Only two days later, detainees of two centres de rétention near Paris went on hunger strike to protest against the sanitary conditions, humiliating searches and a general treatment by police as if they were cattle – a report including the detainees’ detailed demands can be found here.
